1 out of 5 stars Extra charge to actually remove virus.   July 2, 2010
John Harrison (Ohio)
I owned this piece of crap several years ago. It worked fine, till I actually got a virus. McAfee Anti-Virus wouldn't remove the virus. Tech support said they could do it over the phone, for $[...]. I uninstalled McAfee and bought Norton, which--get this--removed the virus.

Now I have a year old Dell which came it McAfee installed. Now I have another virus. And again, McAfee won't remove it. Their web site says, No, we don't remove that one. Turns out they know how to remove it, but they choose not to. To actually remove the virus, I have to buy a fancy expensive version. Silly me. I bought the kind of McAfee anti-virus software that doesn't actually remove viruses.

What a bunch of f@$*&ing cheats.

3 out of 5 stars Slows computer down   February 2, 2010
fms4ju (NJ, USA)
It seems like the virusscan is always performing some function behind the sceens and slows down the performance of my computer. I am thinking about switching back to Norton.

2 out of 5 stars Obnoxious   January 10, 2010
Jonathan Mcneill (Raleigh, NC USA)
Disclaimer: The time-limited trial came with a computer I bought. Some of the annoyances I discuss may be related to the time-limited trial.

I really hate needy programs or electronics. Constantly demanding my attention is completely inappropriate for any sort of computer program. McAfee does exactly that all the time. Some of the messages are trying to convince me to buy the program, of course, but most are demands to reboot my computer every other second due to new versions of the program. I don't know if they dumbed down the language, or if they seriously stop scanning for viruses after they download definitions, but sheesh.

With how obnoxious it is, I have no interest in buying any McAfee products.

The other annoying thing is that there is no way to unsubscribe from the e-mails they send me. At the bottom of every one is a little note saying that the e-mail isn't unsolicited, it was a condition of the agreement I signed when I installed the software. Does the non-trialware version do that? No clue.

I'm sorry, folks, but spam is spam even if you did trick me into agreeing to it.

Does it work as an anti-virus? Maybe. No real way of telling until it misses one and your computer gets hosed. Is it more annoying than most other pieces of software I come in contact with? Yeah, I think that's a reasonable assessment.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Service and protection   January 1, 2010
B. Andrews (Johnson City, TN, USA)
I bought this protection for my laptop and it is horrible. Literally everytime I turn on my computer it tells me something is wrong and it wants to run an hour scan. Of course the scan comes up with nothing because my computer is fine. It will also start scans without my knowledge and it slows my computer down to the point I can't use it and have to cancel the scan. I have not had any problems with my computer besides this service. I will not use them ever again.
