Check which operating system your PC is currently running How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system. - Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.
- Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. Non-portability of W7 March 10, 2010 Anthony Perla (France) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Though not the fault of the vendor, upon installing the upgrade, the installation program notified me that -- since I was installing W7 on a French computer -- that all my programs would be deleted! I suspect this is malicious destruction of property for which MS could be liable, but it certainly discourages one from purchasing the US version and installing it on a non-US PC.
Had I known, I would not have bought the upgrade. I repeat, this was not the fault of the vendor who could not have known my usage of the product.
MS wins again, but my experience does nothing to enhance their image -- which was already poor. W7 is just a cosmetic revamp of the mistake they made with Vista. They should give W7 away for free as penitence.
Windows 7 Update March 9, 2010 J. Scott (Colorado Springs) Updated my laptop from Vista to Window 7 with ease. Anyone can do it by just following the prompts. My computer runs much faster now since it cleans up the hard drive during install.
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade March 8, 2010 F. Asiedu The software arrived in good condition. I installed the 64-bit version of the OS on Dell Latitude laptop. It installed successfully. I activated successfully (or so I thought). It has been working as expected since February 5, 2010. However, there appears to be a glitch somewhere. On March 4, 2010, on booting up, I got a message from Windows Genuine Advantage Notification that I need to activate the software because it is not genuine. Clicked to do that later. The notification has not reappeared and I hope it does not; I know I purchased a genuine product from Amazon.
Cool OS but Installation Note March 7, 2010 Wally Hynds 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This 'upgrade' would not do an install onto a new (empty) drive (failed entering the key) until I first installed my old version of Vista and then asked it to wipe it clean. Microsoft phone support was very helpful in determining the issue but I though it was odd. Now I have to keep my old version of Vista if I ever have to reinstall.
It did do a great job of wiping the old version off ... no remnants lingering but a single (large) file called Windows.old.
Other than that it installed easily and quickly and of course, it is Windows 7.
Worth the Upgrade from XP March 6, 2010 American Trevor 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wanted to move up to 64 bit OS to take advantage of the extra ram and hope more software developers start making 64bit versions. But I also didnt want to get rid of 32 bit XP until all my programs/hardware have moved up to 64 bit. So I decided on a dual boot setup, but it wasnt exactly plug and play.
Started by installing a new hard drive where I wanted Win7, threw in the disk and waited. The upgrade disk didnt take me to the familiar Windows setup that I expected, but instead took me inside XP. Tried to manually run the disk from inside XP and got a great error about how this 64 bit OS was incompatible with the current OS and how it was going to have to wipe XP. That wasnt gonna work with my dual boot setup, so I restarted the computer and unplugged the XP drive.
This time I did go to the windows setup screen, it set up the new hard drive (really fast btw) and installed Win7 pretty easily (it recognized my home network, got all appropriate 64 bit drivers, except for my Soundblaster X-fi still working on that one). The first issue inside Win7 was activating it. With my legally purchased Win7 disk, MS was saying I couldnt activate it since this was an "upgrade" product and there was no previously installed OS. Obviously the big brains at MS did not envision my dual boot set up (legally purchased 32 bit XP) so now they were preventing me from activating. A quick search on the internet found numerous ways around this, from just adding a windows.old folder to editing the registry. The easiest I found was just reinstalling Win7. Yeah, thats right, just put the disk back in and "upgrade" from Win7 to Win7. MS now let me activate it and I am good to go.
Final note on dual booting, you have to use a program like EasyBoot inside of Win7 for it to see both OSes, since after Vista, MS uses a different boot program, and if you do inside of XP it cant see the new boot in Win7. So far very happy with this product.
